Course Description:

This course requires a good foundation of the skills learned in Foundations & Pre-Calculus Math 10. It is designed for students interested in applying to post-secondary programs in Science, Applied Science, Mathematics, and Business. The course focuses on theoretical math topics that prepare students for Calculus. Students with a credit for this course are eligible to take Pre-Calculus 12 and Calculus 12 the following year.

 

Course Topics and Evaluation:

4 Analyzing Quadratic Functions and Inequalities At least 10%*

7 Financial Literacy To be determined
Cumulative Final Exam  At most 20%*

Each unit will be broken into learning outcomes. Each learning outcome is weighted to determine your final mark for each chapter. The list of learning outcomes will be posted on my homework blog. Your course mark will consist of multiple forms of assessment such as assignments, quizzes, chapter tests and retests. You may choose to retest up to a maximum of 5 learning outcomes at the mid-semester point and at the end of the semester, conditional upon demonstrating evidence of homework completion and review.

  • For students who enjoy the challenges of problem-solving, there are opportunities to write the Canadian Computing Competition (15 February ’23), Grade 10 Cayley Contest (22 February ‘23) or Grade 11 Fermat Contest (22 February ‘23). Sign-up and registration will be announced in late January through early February.

 

Textbook and Supplies:

  • Pearson Worktext 11: $25
  • Writing supplies: lined paper or notebook, pencils, pens, eraser, ruler, highlighter, etc.
  • Scientific calculator
  • Organizational tools: Binder, agenda/calendar, etc.

 

Classroom Rules and Expectations:

The following P.R.I.D.E. classroom behaviours are expected of every member in the classroom.

  • Positive Attitude – We will be actively involved in our learning by using class time productively, following instructions, and maintaining appropriate focus.
  • Respect – We treat others the way we wish to be treated, kindly, politely and with empathy. We strive to keep our classroom and learning materials in good condition. Food and beverage are permitted provided they do not distract from the learning environment and garbage is disposed in appropriate waste containers.
  • Integrity – We take ownership for our actions and the associated consequences. Cheating and plagiarizing in any form will result in a mark of zero, parental contact and administration involvement.
  • Diversity – We celebrate individual differences. We demonstrate co-operation, courtesy and inclusiveness in our school by treating people with dignity and respect.
  • Effort – We arrive for class on time and with all necessary materials. When absent, we take responsibility for missed work and for our learning. We work to the best of our ability and ask for help when needed.

 

Extra Math Help:

Parents and students need to be aware that learning and achievement in this course is CUMULATIVE.  Success in this course is directly related to your completion of homework and assignments consistently. You are encouraged to use my homework blog (https://limmath.edublogs.org/) where you can track your homework, quiz and test dates, and check out links to other Math resources.

Students should make optimal use of class time for extra help.  If you require additional assistance outside of class time, you can utilize the weekly Personal Learning Time (Tuesdays and Thursdays) or make appointments with me in person or via email for after-school help at lilim@sd38.bc.ca.
